sympathy is characterized by emotional recognition without the same level of emotional mirroring. When we sympathize with someone, empathy vs sympathy we acknowledge their feelings but may not experience those emotions as intensely as they do. Sympathy tends to be more passive and detached, focusing on providing comfort or support from a distance, rather than fully immersing ourselves in the other person's emotional world.
